Empowering young people to change the world; Julian’s Change the World Challenge

Twelve of Malta and Gozo’s brightest young minds will come together in the first edition of the Julian’s Change The World Challenge 2022 aimed at inspiring youths to use their creativity to address climate change.

The group of 12 students, between the ages of 16 and 17, will be selected from among applicants who will be asked to present their ideas on how to effect local change to have a global impact in terms of climate change.

Themed ‘Managing Climate Change’, the challenge will consist of a three-day workshop to be held between July 4 and 6 at the Mellieha Holiday Complex.

During the programme, led by economist Dr Marie Briguglio, the students will be guided to develop their ideas. Participants will attend workshops, coupled with fun events, and be mentored to present their ideas at the end to a panel of industry experts.

Promising ideas may be offered further sponsorship and mentorship. All participants will be offered one-week paid internships at each of the three main sponsors of this event.

“The vision behind Julian’s Change The World Challenge is perfectly aligned with what QP stands for: youth empowerment, knowledge sharing, entrepreneurship and sustainability, more specifically, in the built environment that we operate in,” said Reuben Xuereb, Chairman & CEO at QP – Malta’s foremost design, engineering and management firm.

QP is one of the three main sponsors of the challenge, together with EY and BOV.

The three-day programme is being organised by the Julian Pathfinder Foundation, a voluntary organisation that was recently set up by Adrian and Nadia Spiteri – the parents of Julian Spiteri – to continue the legacy of the young law student who was passionate about changing the world and reaching his potential.

A few days after Julian, 19, passed away in a traffic accident in April 2021, his family found his handwritten bucket list in a black notebook inside his bedside table. The list included the entry: Change the world.

The foundation was set up to achieve that purpose and the programmes are designed to inspire young people to be the best version of themselves and to think about making the world a better place.

The first edition seeks to encourage them to think about climate change and to empower them to achieve positive outcomes.
